Queensland's Attorney General will appeal the sentence handed to the Kmart kidnapper.
Sterling Free lured a seven-year-old girl away from Kmart North Lakes, north of Brisbane, in December 2018 and molested her before returning her to the shopping centre.
Free was sentenced to eight years jail but will be eligible for parole in August 2021.
Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath announced on Thursday that she has decided to appeal the sentence of Sterling Free on the basis it is manifestly inadequate.
“I understand there has been significant community interest in this matter,” Mrs D’Ath said.
“It is always important that I afford the Director of Public Prosecutions the time necessary to properly consider matters when preparing a brief in consideration of appealing any matter – especially one that involves a child.
“I have now received advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“I have thoroughly considered that advice – and have decided to appeal.
“As the matter will continue to be before the courts, I will not make any further comment.”
